Butterfly Fairy Wand

This is your last week to enter the Silhouette Giveaway! I am choosing the winner on Thursday, September 30th, and announcing their name at the top of my blog, so hurry and get your comments in! Click HERE if you have no idea what I am talking about or you need a refresher about the details.

For the rest of you, here is fun tutorial I just made last week with a little help from my Silhouette. My 4 year old is as girly as they come. Last week she was playing dress up and was decked out in fairy princess gear from head to toe. As she danced and pranced around the room, I noticed she had a regular old #2 pencil in her hand that she was using as a wand. Not only did this clash with her other fairy princess attire, but it hit me that among all the tutus and tiaras in the dressup box, we had no magic fairy wands! Enter Fairy Supermom and save the day with a little magic of her own...

Here's what you'll need:
scissors, pencil, ribbon, scrapbook paper, clear packing tape, thumb tack & glue gun

And her is how to make it:

Cut a strip of your scrapbook paper to the length of the pencil (not including the eraser) and about 1 inch wide.

Secure the scrapbook paper to your pencil with a thin strip of tape. Cut another strip of clear packing tape to the length of your pencil and a bit wider than your strip of paper. Roll the taped paper tightly onto the pencil and secure with the overlapping tape.

Now your pencil looks like its laminated, and maybe the paper won't get as ruined in the mouths of little princesses casting magical spells!

Cut some ribbon to the length you want (mine were about 7 inches long). You can cut as many ribbons as you want. I cut 2 pieces each from 3 different spools so that I had 6 ribbons for my wand.

Assemble the ribbon how you want it by sticking one ribbon at a time through the push pin.

Push a tack into the eraser and secure it by adding some hot glue around the edges.

You could stop here, but I decided to go one step further and use my favorite new toy- (also called Jane)- my Silhouette! I opened the program on my computer and found a sweet little butterfly shape in my Silhouette library. This was going to be perfect!

I loaded the Silhouette with some fun paper....
...hit "cut"...

...and in less than 30 seconds, out came my little butterflies!

I added these to the top of my fairy wand with hot glue- one on each side to give it a 3D look.

And POOF! 1 fun fairy princess wand and 1 happy little girl!

(Don't forget to burn the edges of your ribbon so they don't fray! I did this after the above picture was taken!)

I am so in love with my Silhouette I can hardly wait for one of you to have your own! I've been looking all over the internet finding some really fun creations made with the Silhouette- here are some fun finds:

The Silhouette Blog has these fun ideas:
Ruffled Flower
The Silhouette Flikr Group has some awesome ideas from people all over the internet!

  10. My 3 year old is a princess until the boys are around, then she can rough and tumble it with the best of them. She does have such a good imagination though, she can turn any stick into a wand to give everyone "slippers" like on Cinderella. How cool would it be to win a machine like that so I can make her a custom "real" wand!
