DIY Photo Tile from Let's Make It Ours

This is a project that was linked to a link party on somewhat simple last year that I have had on my list to feature for several months now. (See, you never know when your projects will appear here!)
I love how simple and adorable this is, made by the creative mom from Let's Make It Ours
. . .
I first made one of these with our daughter's photo for my mother and mother-in-law for Mother's Day a few years back and they loved them. Now that we have a new addition to our family, I made another one for them this year! It is really easy and costs next to nothing.

Supplies:

  • 1 6x6 white ceramic tile
  • 1 photo cut to slightly smaller than 6x6
  • 1 easel stand of your choice. I found mine at Michaels
  • Matte Mod Podge
  • Foam craft brush
1. Using your tile as a guide, trim your photo to slightly smaller than your tile size so that you will have a small border of white tile showing through.
2. Brush a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the tile. Place your photo on to the tile and make sure the edged are aligned evenly. Making sure that no glue is seeping out the edges, carefully place a heavy book on top of the tile for 10 minutes. This will make sure the photo sets with out any warping or curling edges.
3. Using a foam brush, brush a thin layer of Mod Podge  over the photo. Make sure you are brushing in one direction only and try not to get glue drips on the sides of the tile. Let the glue dry for at least an hour.
4. Brush another thin layer of Mod Podge in the opposite direction that you previously used. Now you will have vertical and horizontal brush strokes visible. I like using this technique because it resembles linen when it dries...it makes the brush strokes look intentional.
5. Let everything dry and place on your easel! If you do have glue drips on the side of the tile, you can use a utility knife to cut them off.

. . .
What a fun gift idea this would be for any occasion!

  4. I just bought a bunch of tiles at Lowes the other day just because they were on clearance for 22 cents each. Guess I know what to do with them now! Thanks!!

  6. One tip when you are modge podging over photos is to use photos that have a matte finish as well. The glossy photos can kind of peel on the edges as you apply you modge podge. That has been my experience anyway. When I addressed this issue with Amy of at "Modge Podge Rocks", she said that was likely the problem and to use matte finish pics. Just thought I would share so no one got into their project only to be disappointed when the pic peels.
