I love a good-smelling home and I am always on the hunt for ways to keep my home fresh and smelling great. When I wake up in the morning, I'd prefer not to smell the onion I cut up the night before. When I come home in the evening after a long day away from the house, I'd like to not smell the dirty cleats from yesterday's baseball practice. I think a good smelling candle is always a great find, but with 3 young kids and a tendency to leave candles burning all night and day, this isn' talways  the safest way to go! Air Fresheners aside, there are so many great ideas on how to keep your home smelling pleasant simply by using items you already have on hand. Here are 3 examples that work for me:

1. Simmer a pot of water on your stove and add grated citrus peels in the spring and summer or cinnamon sticks in the fall and winter.

2. Think outside the laundry room and add dryer sheets in random places around the house- inside your coat closet, inside the cupboard under the sink, under your couch etc. You can even place them in front of your air conditioning filters- that'll get a fresh smell working through the whole house quick!

3. Place a bowl of vinegar in a room with an especially stubborn odor and in 24 hours the odor should be gone! Vinegar not only covers a smell, but it also gets rid of it completely!

What tips do you have to keep your home smelling nice? Leave me a comment, I'd love to read some new ideas!

  2. We used to get our house cleaned, I loved the way it smelled... They always left the house with a spray of a citrus odor fighter. Since this isn't something we can afford I clean the house...which means it doesn't get cleaned all at once or in the 1 hour it used to take the ladies. BUT, I was smart enough to purchase a bottle of that spray AND I spray it in the garage close to the furnace intake. (not to close!) When the furnace is sucking in air to heat or cool our home the scent infiltrates the house. I love it and it makes me feel like I have a clean house, even if I don't!

  3. I use & sell Scentsy products. They don't get hot enough to burn and you don't have to worry about whether or not you've left a hot candle going! I love that you can customize the scents to whatever you like, too!

  4. We don't use harsh chemicals or toxic liquids, etc. in our house. Instead, I clean with vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, and it works just as good as and a lot of the time even better than store-bought cleaners!! (And it's so much cheaper!!) The smell of vinegar can be a little off-putting to some, though. A nice little trick is to add a drop or two of scented oil to your spray bottle (of either vinegar or hydrogen peroxide) and voila! Great smell!! You can choose from many different scents and if you use good quality oils, you don't need much! It covers up the smell of the vinegar and now you've got an all-natural cleaner with a customizable scent! (Not to discount the smell or cleaning power of pine-sol. It is a fond scent-memory of my childhood!)

  5. Great tips! I have never heard of the vinegar sitting in a room for 24 hours. I will have to try it the next time I burn something. Hehe!

  7. I enjoyed coming across this post! I have been feeling like my house is not smelling its freshest! It is making me not like my kitty cats as much for it! I finally pulled the liter boxes outside and washed them out with vinegar and water and that made a world of difference. I have a candle that smells like orange blossoms and let me tell you! It totally smells like orange blossoms! We live across the street from an orange grove and we know what we are talkin' about but that orange grove only gives a short burst of orange blossom love. Anyway, I am off to clean the house right now and I am going to use some of your suggestions. I have company in about two hours and I want my house to smell fresh not stale and like a liter box!

  8. I love simmering cinnamon, cloves, orange peel in the fall and winter.

I'll try just the lemon and lime now! Makes sense.

I have put dryer sheets just under the furnace vents... it works wonderfully.

I've also used pans of charcoal in my basement to absorb the musty smell.

  9. I personally love the Wallflower plugs from Bath & Body Works. They can start out strong but sometimes strong is good...;)
